Cubic yards to tons
Volume in cubic yards = L × W × depth(in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27. Quarries sell by the ton, so multiply by density. Common crushed stone and pea gravel weigh about 1.3–1.5 tons per cubic yard; 1.4 is a sensible default. Ask your supplier for the exact figure for their material.
Typical depths
Walkway: 2–3 in of decorative gravel over landscape fabric
Driveway: 4–6 in base layer (larger crushed stone) plus 2 in top layer
Patio/paver base: 4 in compacted base
Compaction
Crushed base compacts roughly 10–15%, so order a little extra for layers you plan to tamp.
It uses the standard formula shown on this page and rounds bags, boxes and pieces up to whole units. Product sizes vary by brand, so confirm with the label or your supplier before you buy.
Should I buy extra material?
Yes. A 5–10% allowance covers cuts, spills and uneven surfaces; running short mid-job usually costs more than a few leftovers.
